Dis-Chem was founded when recently qualified pharamacists, Ivan and Lynette Saltzman, opened their first retail pharmacy in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg, South Africa. The retail pharmacy introduced the concept of a discount pharmacy with product categories not previously offered in South African pharmacies. Dis-Chem aims to continue growing its market share across its product offering by focusing on the customer and building on Dis-Chem's brand positioning. and converting independent pharmacies to the Dis-Chem brand.

Dis-Chem Pharmacies Limited operates a chain of pharmacy stores. The Company offers medicines, beauty care, supplements, toiletries, and other health care products. Dis-Chem Pharmacies serves dispensaries, family clinics, and self-medication centers in South Africa. Dis-Chem intends to expand its wholesale business into the distribution business whereby it would service both the wholesalers and retailers.
